Additional note
-
The “progress” narrative is extensively laid out in Russ Banham, The Fight for Fairfax: Private Citizens and Public Policymaking.
-
It should be noted that Banham’s is not a conventional history but written with the consent and cooperation of several real estate developers, all co-founders of the Fairfax-based business group the 123 Club (named for Route 123, the central artery). The same sponsors, who included significant George Mason University boosters and benefactors, also helped him line up the university press as the book’s publisher (Fight, xii.). According to his website, Banham’s “contract writing services” include the “writing of corporate history books and CEO and business owner biographies;” the site’s “Bookcase” page lists 32 of these. His research for Fairfax rests substantially on oral histories he conducted with several of the same 123 Club founders who “permitted” him to write the book.
