Restrictive Covenants in Arlington Neighborhoods
Story
The many Restrictive Covenants researched at Arlington County Courthouse listed restrictions related to property ownership, such as building type or a minimum cost of construction. However, the restrictions related to race, particularly against Black people varied in the language used to describe those not sanctioned to purchase property, such as “any person of African descent,” a negro, or a person of negro descent,” and “of any race other than Caucasian race.”
